Borden Farm Market Proves Excellent Location for 6th
Annual BWA Picnic
Borden Farm Market provided an ideal location this year's
outing and even a good old fashioned rainstorm could not
keep a band of BWA faithful from enjoying the 6th Annual
Picnic. Special thanks go to Win Borden and his troops for
making the premises available, moving tables into position and
providing a number of memorable stories about growing up on
the farm north of Merrifield.
The Borden Farm Market is a special place. Seven acres of
flower, vegetable and herb gardens and 900 feet of mulched
paths allow visitors to personally inspect the farm's produce.
Travel to the Duck Pond, located at the edge of a scenic
wetland, or follow the Bamboo Trail to the henhouse, keeping a
weather eye out for ambushing roosters.
Borden Farm Market was a wonderful setting for this year's
picnic. And the food was outstanding as usual. Perhaps more
importantly, we had a great meeting that featured several
animated discussions about writing and, of course, a few read /
critique exercises. Mark it down as another successful outing.
Now how do we top it in 2009?
Those of you who did not attend, and for that matter, those of us who did,
should seriously consider visiting Borden Farm Market again this summer. Sue
and I have become regular customers. Fresh raspberries, crisp pea pods and
summer squash are my favorites. Sue is a fan of the little red potatoes and
green onions. Win assures me that later in the season there will be tomatoes,
sweet corn and pumpkins, too.
Directions:
The Borden Farm is located 4 miles north of Merrifield on the way to Crosslake
and is easy to find. From the intersection of 371 and 210 in Brainerd go east on
210 until you come to the stop light at CR 3 (east side of shopping center).
Follow CR 3 north 8.5 miles to the "Y Store" and turn right at the flashing yellow
light, heading toward Crosslake. Go 3.1 miles until you see a state sign that
says "Borden Farm Market". Turn right on Borden Road and follow for 1/2 mile
until it initersects with Old Mill Road. Turn right and proceed 200 feet, then turn
left into the parking lot. Questions? Phone 218-232-0848.
